How Games Behind (GB) is Calculated
In competitive sports standings (such as MLB baseball, NBA basketball, and NFL divisions), the gap between the division leader and trailing teams is tracked in “Games Behind” (GB):
For example, if the first-place team has a 60–30 record and the second-place team has a 54–36 record:
GB = ((60 - 54) + (36 - 30)) ÷ 2 = (6 + 6) ÷ 2 = 6.0 Games Behind.
| Team Standing | Wins | Losses | Winning Percentage | Games Behind (GB) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st: New York | 64 | 36 | 64 ÷ 100 = .640 | — (Leader) |
| 2nd: Boston | 59 | 41 | 59 ÷ 100 = .590 | ((64-59) + (41-36)) ÷ 2 = 5.0 GB |
| 3rd: Toronto | 52 | 48 | 52 ÷ 100 = .520 | ((64-52) + (48-36)) ÷ 2 = 12.0 GB |
| 4th: Baltimore | 44 | 56 | 44 ÷ 100 = .440 | ((64-44) + (56-36)) ÷ 2 = 20.0 GB |
